Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is electrolysis?
A: Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. It treats each individual follicle with a small probe, applying a small amount of current to kill the follicle at the source.
Q: Is electrolysis permanent?
A: Yes! When a follicle is properly treated, it will be unable to grow a new hair again. Multiple sessions are needed to completely clear an area due to hair growth cycles, but if the recommended treatment plan is stuck to, the results are permanent.
Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: This depends on the treatment area, hair density, and your personal hair growth cycles. Most clients come weekly or biweekly for several months to a year for full clearance, though it may be longer.
Q: Does electrolysis hurt?
A: Everyone experiences sensitivity differently. Most people feel a quick heat or pinch and are able to tolerate well. If the current is ever too much, settings can be adjusted to make sure that you're able to tolerate the treatment. Topical numbing products can also help.
Q: Is electrolysis safe for all skin tones and hair types?
A: Yes, electrolysis is safe on any hair color and every skin tone - including blonde, red, white, gray, or very fine hair.
Q: What areas can be treated?
A: Almost anywhere! Face, chin, upper lip, bikini area, chest, abdomen, arms, underarms, fingers/toes, and more. If you're unsure, just ask!
Q: What should I do before my appointment?
A: A few days before your appointment, shave the area so that the hair will be approximately 1/4 of an inch long. This will make the hair long enough for me to remove with my tweezers once the follicle is treated. If you think that you will need some sort of topical numbing product, apply 30 minutes before your appointment so that it has time to set in. Other than that, just come with a clean area (no makeup or heavy skincare)!
Q: What should I expect after treatment?
A: There may be some temporary redness, slight swelling, or tiny scabs. These usually fade within a few hours to a few days and are perfectly normal. You will be given aftercare tips at your appointment to make sure that the area heals quickly.
Q: Is electrolysis safe for transgender clients?
A: Absolutely. Electrolysis is often used for gender-affirming care (including facial hair removal and pre-surgery requirements). My practice is a safe space for all those on their journey with gender-identity.
Q. Can I shave between sessions?
A: Absolutely! Shaving is the best way to removal excess hair between sessions as it cuts the hair at the surface instead of at the root where the probe needs to reach. Just be sure to let your hair grow to at least 1/4 of an inch before your next session! Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, or epilators.
Q: How should I prepare for a consultation?
A: Think about your goals, your pain sensitivity, and any past hair removal methods you've tried. I'll walk you through everything else.
Q: Can I get electrolysis if I have sensitive skin or acne?
A: Usually, yes. We'll adjust the treatment for your skin's needs. Let me know about medications such as Accutane or retinoids - they can affect timing.
Q. What is your cancellation and no-show policy?
A: Cancellation made at least 24 hours before your appointment are free of charge. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice will incur a 50% fee. No-shows will be charged the full cost of the missed appointment. If an emergency happens, please reach out to me as soon as you can.
